Dry, peeling lips don’t get better. They get worse.

It starts with slightly rubbing them together. Then it happens again. And again. Until the next time you see yourself in the mirror, it looks like you have come down with a severe case of lip leprosy.

Clearly, lip care is important, and dry, flaky lips are really annoying. What those dry lips need is a moisture intervention. And a useful DIY doesn’t have to be that hard.

In fact, making a cannabidiol (CBD) lip balm can be surprisingly quick and easy. But of course, besides do-it-yourself efficiency, we want to make sure the ingredients are actually going to help your lips stay hydrated.

CBD is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid that has been linked to many therapeutic benefits, such as  reducing inflammation and pain to helping with acne.

Shea butter, essentially shea tree nut fat, is another ingredient in our DIY lip balm, and also has been touted as an anti-inflammatory, as well as a moisture booster. Essential oils of lavender and peppermint have been linked with many benefits of their own, including antimicrobial benefits for lavender and antiviral effects against cold sores for peppermint oil. Most or all of these ingredients are easy to find at your local health food store.

Ingredients and materials

  • 1.5 oz. glass jar or old lip balm container
  • Pure shea butter
  • CBD oil
  • Lavender or peppermint essential oil
  • A tablespoon (the metric equivalent is 15 milliliters)
  • A microwaveable glass or ceramic bowl

1. Because pure shea butter is a little on the harder side, you’ll need to warm it up just enough to soften it. Take your spoon and scoop out two spoonfuls of shea butter into the microwaveable bowl.

2. Heat the shea butter for 30 to 40 seconds on high (100 percent power) in the microwave. If you are unsure of how quickly it will heat, you can start out in 10-second increments and check whether the shea butter is warm enough to easily stir with the spoon)

3. Stir the shea butter until it has a creamy consistency.

4. Add in two full droppers of CBD oil and stir again.

5. Add in five drops of lavender or peppermint essential oil and stir again.

6. Once it is all mixed in, spoon the mixture into your jar or container. Steps 1-6 should take less than 5 minutes.

7. Leave the mixture to sit overnight.

8. By morning, it will be set and ready for use. It should go on clear and leave a nice gloss to your lips. Reapply as needed.

(Caution: Because shea butter is sourced from tree nuts, it could possibly trigger an allergic reaction. Always check with a medical professional first. For everyone else, it is always a good idea to do a spot test on a small area of your skin for a few hours before applying a large amount)

Just like that, you have made your very own moisturizing lip balm — no chemistry set needed.

So the next time you see your lips begin to crumble before you, grab your soothing CBD lip balm and bring those smackers back from the dead.
