he amazing thing about marijuana is that it is IMPOSSIBLE to over-dose. The National Cancer Institute recently backed that up by announcing, “Because cannabinoid receptors, unlike opioid receptors, are not located in the brainstem areas controlling respiration, lethal overdoses from Cannabis and cannabinoids do not occur.”
Now, that doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to get so high you feel like you’re doing to die — especially if you’ve eaten a potent edible or taken an extra fat dab.
I’ve heard a lot of stories from people, particularly parents, who accidently over-dose themselves with THC, feel an impending doom, or as if they will ever feel normal again. Don’t worry, as this too shall pass. If you feel suddenly sucked into a wave of high that is way too strong for you, here are some things you can do to help yourself.
First, don’t underestimate the power of fresh air, rohto eye-drops and washing your hands to really rejuvenate you.
While no one has figured out one guaranteed quick-fix that works universally, there are many techniques I’ll walk you through some techniques that will significantly lessen your high. Typically the feelings of ‘”too high” are the result of eating a edible that is too strong. Edibles can be tricky to dose because they don’t take effect for over an hour. You may eat a little bit, feel perfectly fine and eat a little more. An hour or two later, the high hits you like a semi.
When treating cancer and other serious illnesses, you might have to take high dosages of cannabis concentrate, and until you reach a comfort level with dosing, you might want to counteract the discomfort with one or more of the following suggestions. If you have access to products such as Mary’s Rescue they can also aid you during this process.
One of the most promising leads to lessen your high was found in 2013 when researchers from LSU’s School of Medicine were testing the anti-inflammation properties of cannabis on mice. They found that giving the mice an ibuprofen caused the THC in marijuana to produce only anti-inflammatory effects, eliminating the psychological high. I tried this out myself when I ate too strong of an edible the other day, and it was successful in bringing down my high in less than thirty minutes.
Vitamins, especially Vitamins C and B, can help to diminish the high. Try a big glass of orange juice or cook up some bell peppers. If you have Vitamin C supplements, a 500 mg tab taken with a B-complex tab will quickly end the feeling of being too high.
When it comes down to it, the best thing you can do if you’re overwhelmed with THC is to sleep it off. It’s best to watch a movie or read a book to distract your mind while you slowly fall asleep.
A relaxing shower or bath with a few drops of calming essential oils, such as lavender, can do wonders in helping to calm and collect yourself.
If you’re unable to quiet your mind by relaxation, another way to go is to take a walk, exercise or do some quick push-ups. Getting your blood flowing and body active helps some people snap out of the feeling of being too high.
If you have somewhere important to be and don’t have time to sleep it off, a chocolate bar, an energy drink or a cup of coffee have historically worked in sobering some people up.
If you’re around a big group of people and start feeling too high all of a sudden, it can lead to feelings of paranoia and anxiety. It helps to isolate yourself and practice some of these deep-breathing techniques proven to quiet your mind and body:
Sama Vritti or “Equal Breathing” starts with inhaling for four counts, following with an exhale through the nose for four counts.
Nadi Shodhana or “Alternate Nostril Breathing” is a technique that is said to clear the channels of the mind. You begin by holding a finger down over your right nostril and breathing deeply into your left nostril, and then switching to hold down your left nostril while exhaling through your right.
Guided Visualization is helpful if it feels like your mind is racing out of control. There are many guided visualizations available for free on YouTube, like this one here, but if you don’t have access to the internet you can create your own happy place in your mind by focusing solely on positive imagery and self-talk.
Pro-Tip: Brushing your teeth and gargling saltwater will help get rid of any smell of pot on your breath. And if you’re trying to hide your high, don’t forget to wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.
